Vendor Biography

I completed this still life series earlier in the pandemic. The series is deliberate and contained, composed of carefully selected everyday and specialty food items. The paintings explore a contemporary mode of consumerism where promise and desire are rendered in branding and lettering. I wanted to show the persistence, even in two dimensional form, of triggers for whimsy and play. For me, the rosewater, garlic, and watermelon recall Iran and my childhood household, and suggest my attempts to connect with history through consumption.

Negin Shamshiri is a Toronto-based painter. In addition to this still life series, she uses archival material and spatial references to examine the interplay among history, identity, and gender.
